Church prays for peace in the Middle East

8 August 2006

Parish churches across the land are praying for a rapid end to the violence devastating the Middle East, and for wisdom for the world’s political leaders, as the crisis continues to unfold.

Special prayers have been posted on the Church of England’s website to help individuals and groups pray for peace. Bible readings have also be selected to help focus reflections on peace for the world.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, has made several statements calling for an end to the conflict. On 19 July, he condemned the worsening violence in a letter to the Heads of Churches in Lebanon.

The Archbishop also featured on Radio 4’s Today Programme to discuss the subject.

An edited version of an article written by the Archbishop appeared in The Observer on 6 August.

Local churches will continue to pray for all those affected by the crisis, and many church buildings are open for quiet prayer and reflection throughout the day.
