Common Worship offers Daily Prayer

11 May 2005

For the first time in its history, the Church of England has a definitive daily prayer book. Common Worship: Daily Prayer provides structured prayers for every day of the year. Alone or in groups, individuals can link their personal devotions into the prayer life of the Church.

The preliminary edition of Daily Prayer, published in 2002, sold more than 25,000 copies. The definitive volume has been revised in the light of feedback from those sales.

Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams welcomed the publication noting, “ Here are rich resources to help us enter into the shared praying life of the Church.”

Common Worship: Daily Prayer offers orders of service for Prayer During the Day, Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer for each day of the week and each season of the Church’s year. The service of Night Prayer (Compline) has variants for each day and season. Prayer During the Day proved a popular innovation in the preliminary edition, specially written for those wanting to enrich their daily quiet time and develop a regular pattern of prayer.

“The revised Common Worship: Daily Prayer is ideal for anyone wanting to follow a regular pattern of prayer, praise and Bible reading,” said the Revd Gilly Myers, Editor of Praxis News of Worship.

Daily Prayer also offers a wealth of seasonal and other devotional material, including collects and refrains, forms of penitence, canticles and the complete Psalter. There are cycles of intercession topics for daily and seasonal use. The Canticles include a large selection of scriptural material, and the Psalter features specially written prayers to complement each psalm.

“This is a basic tool of discipleship,” said Canon Christopher Cocksworth, Principal of Ridley Hall, Cambridge. “It allows 'the word of Christ to dwell in us richly' as we read, praise and pray together.”

Common Worship: Daily Prayer is published by Church House Publishing, priced £20 (hardback), £40 (leather) and is available from all Christian bookshops and Church House Bookshop, 31 Great Smith Street, London SW1P 3BN, tel. 020-7898 1300, e mail bookshop@c-of-e.org.uk, or on the web at: www.chbookshop.co.uk (mail order available).
