New Children’s Adviser for the Church of England

20 April 2006

The Board of Education of the Archbishops’ Council has announced that Mary Hawes is to be the Church of England’s National Children’s Adviser.

Mary, currently Children’s Work Adviser for the Diocese of London, will begin her new role in September, taking over from Diana Murrie who is retiring after 11 years in the post.

The role of the National Children’s Adviser is key to sharing good practice on how local churches can develop their work to better engage, nurture and teach under-11s. The new appointment comes at an important time for the Church, with the imminent publication of ‘Mission-Shaped Children’, a sourcebook that identifies how churches can shape themselves around children by engaging with their needs and ideas.

After training as a teacher, Mary worked as an editor for Scripture Union, before moving to Rochester Cathedral to work as Education & Visits Officer.Mary also serves as a non-stipendiary priest at St Leonard's Church, Streatham.

Mary is looking forward to the new opportunity: “Current government policy proclaims that Children Matter! I'm looking forward to the challenge of ensuring that children continue to matter in the Church's agenda too.”
