DIOCESAN SYNOD MOTIONS

MARRIAGE MEASURE 2008: QUALIFYING CONNECTION (GS 1800 A and GS1800 B)

A motion was moved by the Bishop of Ripon and Leeds (the Rt Revd John Packer) on behalf of the Ripon and Leeds Diocesan Synod, and after debate the motion was carried by the Synod in the following unamended form:

'That this Synod request the Archbishops' Council to introduce legislation which would enable the Bishop to give directions allowing those who have a "qualifying connection" with a particular parish (under the Church of England Marriage Measure 2008) to marry in any church within the benefice of which that parish forms a part.'

FAREWELLS

The Archbishop of York paid farewell tributes to the Rt Revd David James, Bishop of Bradford; and the Rt Revd Tom Wright, the Bishop of Durham. The Archbishop of Canterbury paid farewell tributes to the Bishop Tom; and the Rt Revd David Stancliffe, the Bishop of Salisbury.

 

The Archbishop of Canterbury gave a brief reflection on the Synod's key achievements over the quinquennium; followed by thanking Canon Christina Baxter (Chair of the House of Laity), the Ven Norman Russell (Prolocutor of the Convocation of Canterbury), and the Revd Preb Kay Garlick (Chair of the Business Committee) for their respective contributions to the work of the Synod. The Archbishop further paid tribute to a number of members of Synod not intending to stand at the forthcoming elections who had also served on the Church Assembly (the Synod's preceding body). Finally, the Archbishop paid tribute to Colin Menzies, who is retiring as Clerk to the Corporation of Church House.

PROROGATION

The Archbishop of York pronounced the dissolution of the Synod on the Orders of HM The Queen and Privy Council.
