Archbishop announces new Third Church Estates Commissioner

6 October 2006

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, has announced the appointment of Mr Timothy Walker to serve as Third Church Estates Commissioner in succession to Lady Brentford.

Timothy Walker, who is 61, was until last year the Director General of the Health and Safety Executive and has previously served as Deputy Chairman of HM Customs and Excise. In addition he is a charity trustee and serves as a Non Executive director of the London Strategic Health Authority. A committed Anglican, he worships at St Luke’s Battersea where he is a sidesman and runs a parish theology group.

As Third Church Estates Commissioner, he chairs the Pastoral and Redundant Churches Committees and the Bishoprics and Cathedrals Committee as well as being a member of the Board of Governors and the Management Advisory Committee.

Dr Williams said: ‘I am very pleased that the Church Commissioners will be getting a Commissioner of wide experience in public service, especially since his direct involvement and commitment in parish life will give him an important perspective in his work.”

Timothy Walker said: “I am honoured to have been given the opportunity to serve the Church of England in this way. I am looking forward to working with colleagues to help shape and lead the Commissioners in their support for the work of the Church.”
