Prayers Inspired by Simon from Cyrene

Simon from Cyrene carries Jesus’ cross in a mountainous setting. There are very few people in the image, some armed guards and, slightly hidden by Jesus and Simon, two disciples.

Teach me, my God and King,
In all things thee to see,
And what I do in anything,

To do it as for thee:

A servant with this clause
Makes drudgery divine:
Who sweeps a room, as for thy laws,

Makes that and the action fine.

GEORGE HERBERT

I am no longer my own but yours.
Put me to what you will,
rank me with whom you will;
put me to doing, put me to suffering;
let me be employed for you or laid aside for you,
exalted for you or brought low for you.
Let me be full, let me be empty,
let me have all things, let me have nothing.
I freely and wholeheartedly yield all things
 to your pleasure and disposal.

And now, glorious and blessed God,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
you are mine and I am yours.
So be it.

And the covenant made on earth,
let it be ratified in heaven.

Amen.

METHODIST COVENANT PRAYER

The task thy wisdom hath assigned,
O let me cheerfully fulfil;
in all my works thy presence find,
and prove thy good and perfect will.

 CHARLES WESLEY

Govern all by Your wisdom, O Lord, so that my soul may always be serving You in the way You will, and not as I may choose. Do not punish me, I beg You, Thee, by granting what I wish or ask, if it offends Your love, which would always live in me. Let me die to myself, that I may serve You: let me live to You, who in Yourself is the true Life.

ST. TERESA OF AVILA

Thy way, not mine, O Lord,
however dark it be:
lead me by thine own hand,
choose out the path for me.

Not mine, not mine, the choice
in things or great or small:
be thou my guide, my strength,
my wisdom, and my all.

 H.  BONAR
