The purpose of Pre-Theological Education is to enable as wide a range of candidates as possible to make good use of theological education. In the first instance, the work makes it possible for candidates to fulfil the conditions of their recommendations. The work of pre-theological education takes place within the wider context of the continuing Christian education of the whole people of God.
The recommendation of candidates for selection for ordination training sometimes carries conditions where the Advisers have identified certain needs which require attention before the candidate is ready to proceed to theological training. Under the programme, the National Adviser works with the relevant Diocesan Director of Ordinands to develop a plan of action for each candidate in response to the conditional recommendation. The programme for any one candidate is made up of a variety of elements which are available on a local, diocesan or regional basis. The National Adviser offers advice, scrutinises and approves proposals. These are funded in partnership between the Central Fund for Ministerial Training and diocesan monies. The National Adviser also manages the moderation of each candidate.
