Year of the Child 2009

Celebrating Year of the Child 2009 (to mark UNICEF’s 30th anniversary), originally an idea from Children’s Advisers in York Province, has now been taken up by churches and dioceses across the country.

Mary Hawes the national Children’s Adviser (part of the Education Division of the Archbishops’ Council) spoke at a special event in Gloucester Cathedral attended by nearly 1,000 people.

“The candle which each parish received reminds us not only that we must pass the light on to our children, but that we adults must be very careful not to snuff out children’s light of faith through our words, actions or attitudes. The Year of the Child 2009 is an opportunity to highlight the issues, injustices and challenges facing children and young people today. It gives the chance for the church’s work and ministry with children and young people to be celebrated and the possibility of new initiatives being created. Our hope is that this year will help not only to highlight children and young people in the church but also to offer strategic possibilities for lasting change and growth.”
