Lambeth Palace Library

Actress Patsy Kensit was just one of the many visitors to Lambeth Palace Library this year when searching for her clerical ancestor the Revd James Mayne for the television programme Who Do You Think You Are? (BBC 1).

You can support the work of the historic library of the Archbishops of Canterbury by signing up to the Back-a- Book scheme which asks people to sponsor vital conservation and repair work. Following repair, each book will have a bookplate placed inside acknowledging the generosity of its sponsor. Founded in 1610 by Archbishop Bancroft, the library contains one of the most important collections of early printed books in any of the great national libraries, including a Gutenberg Bible printed in 1455 and 30,000 other works dating from the invention of printing to 1700.
