Welcoming church weddings

Clergy and couples in Bradford and Oxford Dioceses will be at the forefront of a new Archbishops' Council project which aims to attract and welcome more people for a church wedding, in the run up to the Marriage Measure becoming law.

A series of consultations in the two trial zones will result in a range of resources to support churches in their wedding ministry.

The Marriage Measure, approved by General Synod and expected to become law next year, will make it easier for couples to have a wedding in a church where they have a family or other special connection.

The Weddings Project resulted from recent research which found that church is still widely considered the 'proper' place for a wedding, but many non-churchgoing couples believe they don't qualify.
