Training Modules

For many years some people have asked why the subject of Christian stewardship has not been included in the training of ordinands. The answer has been that there is too much ground already to cover in theological colleges and on courses and there is no room for this aspect of discipleship. The same is true for the training of readers.

If dioceses cover this aspect of discipleship in the early life of a newly ordained or newly licensed person, then that is all to the good. It could be argued that it is better dealt with when the newly ordained is anchored in a parish and can more readily combine the theory and practice.

The national stewardship committee decided that the way forward would be to prepare three training modules for use in dioceses.

  • Theological - what the Bible has to say about creation, gifts, responsibility, accountability, tithing, jubilee, the grace of giving, discipleship, ownership, relationship to the things of God, generosity etc.
  • Personal - the development of the individual leader and their understanding of and relationship to their gifts, money and possessions to help them have a balanced relationship with these things.
  • Practical - the importance of challenging Church people with the principles and practice of Christian stewardship and the benefits that come from addressing vision and commitment in a regular and not haphazard way.

These training modules have been produced by a team of stewardship practitioners. The aim is to assist people in ministerial education work through some of the issues involved in teaching stewardship. The modules are designed to help clergy and readers to enable people in their parishes get to grips with this particular aspect of Christian discipleship. There are three sessions:

  • Theology
  • Money and Me
  • Practicalities (including sample sermons)
