The developing situation regarding the spread of influenza A/H1N1 ('swine flu') is an understandable cause of concern for many. With this in mind, the Church has published prayers for individual and church use.
Guidance for churches
*Revised advice from the Archbishops - 26 November 2009*
Guidance for churches, specifically regarding the sharing of Communion, is contained in a letter from the Archbishops of Canterbury and York to diocesan bishops, issued on 22nd July 2009. It recommends the suspension of the sharing of the chalice at communion. An update was given to the College of Bishops at their meeting in September, and a further update on 30th October 2009.
The NHS website contains further information on swine flu and advice on restricting its spread.
Emergency planning
The government, through the Department for Communities and Local Government, has recently published updated guidance (written in consultation with representatives of faith communities) on the impact of a possible pandemic on faith communities' activities, and how they might support wider communities in such eventuality: Faith Communities and Pandemic Flu: Guidance for faith communities and local influenza pandemic committees
Letter from Rt Rev John Packer
The Bishop of Ripon and Leeds wrote to Dioceses and Bishops on the 23rd of June 2009. He included two papers, one summarising government advice to faith communities and the other addressing the administration of Holy Communion during a flu pandemic.
