Notes:  1.  The right hand set of figures in each column gives the magnitude, in descending order, of the left hand figures. Thus in terms of area, Bath and Wells is the 11th largest diocese, Birmingham is the 41st.
 2.   C and Y denote dioceses in the Provinces of Canterbury and York respectively.
 3.   Diocesan population figures are based on the 2005 mid-year estimates. Crown copyright material is reproduced under Class Licence Number C01W0000297 with the permission of the Controller of HMSO. However as government boundaries do not match diocesan boundaries there has to be an element of estimation.
 4.   Area figures are calculated from material supplied by ONS and the Church Commissioners.
 5.   Benefices with parishes attached as listed in the Parish Register maintained by the Research and Statistics Dept.
 6.   Parishes and churches are as listed in the Parish Register maintained by the Research and Statistics Dept. Includes 106 churches with no buildings
 7.   As at 31 December 2006. Source: Church Commissioners. Does not include 269 part-timers.
 8.   The Diocese in Europe is composed of 295 separate congregations.
