The Church of England’s Ethical Investment Advisory Group makes recommendations on ethical investment policy to the Church of England investing bodies. It aims to provide assurance to the investing bodies and to the wider church of a robust process of developing an appropriate ethical investment policy for the Church of England. It also seeks to promote high standards of corporate behaviour.
The EIAG has a brief to communicate its recommendations to the wider church. It publishes all its main policy recommendations and offers ethical investment advice to parishes, dioceses, cathedrals and other Church of England agencies.
The EIAG was originally established in 1994 as the Ethical Investment Working Group. The Group includes representation from the Church Commissioners for England, the CBF Church of England Funds, The Church of England Pensions Board, the General Synod, the Archbishops’ Council, and the Council for Mission and Public Affairs.
The Group meets three times a year at Church House to develop its guidance on inappropriate areas of investment for the investing bodies and to manage a programme of engagement with companies of which the investing bodies are shareholders. The EIAG draws on theological advice from within the Church and research by the Ethical & Responsible Investment Department at CCLA Investment Management Ltd.
The Group produces an annual report, which is circulated to Synod members for the July Synod. The EIAG’s work is then periodically discussed by Synod as a whole; alternatively the EIAG may organise a fringe meeting. This process provides a forum for discussion and a platform for introducing areas of concern from the wider church, which is often a catalyst for future projects and research. The annual report is publicly available following Synod.
