What about income tax?

As a pensioner paid through the Church Commissioners, your tax affairs will be handled by the West Yorkshire & Craven Area Office of HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). The dedicated telephone number is: 01274 205714 (please have your national insurance number to hand when calling)

HMRC will calculate your tax code and send you a Notice of Coding (Form P2) showing how your allowances are dealt with and your code is calculated. You should check this carefully and, if you disagree with the calculations or do not understand them, write to HMRC directly or telephone them.
Simultaneously, HMRC will tell us to calculate your monthly tax deduction in accordance with that code. Please remember that we are not told how your code is calculated but we have to deduct tax from your pension in accordance with that code. HMRC may revise your code at any time, and typically will do so after the Budget, although normally they will not notify you about any Budget-related adjustment. A change in coding may involve retrospective recalculation of tax deducted since 6 April.

Press here for information on tax for overseas pensioners.

If you were previously paid by us and were receiving tax-free HLC payments, please note we are not allowed to make any further payments or adjustments. If you wish to claim any tax relief for the period before your retirement you should either include this at box 1M.31 on your tax return or write to the West Yorkshire & Craven Area Office.
