Relations with the Roman Catholic Church in England

The English Anglican-Roman Catholic Committee (English ARC) works to promote relations between the Church of England and the Roman Catholic Church in England at local and national level. The Co-Chairs of English ARC are the Rt Revd Michael Scott-Joynt (Bishop of Winchester; Church of England) and the Rt Revd Declan Lang (Bishop of Clifton; Roman Catholic Church). This Committee works closely with Anglican-Roman Catholic Committees in France and Belgium.

English ARC's recent work has focused on the following areas:

  • Continued to monitor Joint Anglican-Roman Catholic Schools.
    A summary of English ARC's statements on Joint Church Schools is available.
  • Study visit to Liverpool Hope University College - an ecumenical institution formed from separate Anglican and Roman Catholic colleges.
  • Study visit to the Armed Forces Chaplaincy Centre to meet Anglican, Roman Catholic and Methodist chaplains and learn about their ecumenical ministry to the Armed Forces.
  • Study visit to the Local Ecumenical Partnership in Cricklade, Wiltshire.
  • Discussion of the House of Bishops' response to One Bread One Body, the teaching document on the Eucharist by the Roman Catholic Bishops of Great Britain and Ireland. The full text of the Church of England response - The Eucharist: Sacrament of Unity - is available.
  • Meeting with a member of IARCCUM (International Anglican Roman Catholic Commission for Unity and Mission which is following up the meeting of Anglican and Roman Catholic Bishops in Mississauga in May 2000. English ARC is playing its part in carrying forward the agreed Action Plan.
  • Study and discussion of the document produced by the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith - Dominus Jesus.
  • Study and discussion of "Fides et Ratio", a Papal document about Faith and Reason
  • Study and discussion of the paper about Petrine Ministry produced by the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity
  • Study and discussion of the ARCIC report: "Mary: Grace and Hope in Christ". The text of this report can be viewed in the ecumenical dialogues section of the Anglican Communion website at www.anglicancommunion.org
