The Adviser is appointed by and reports to the Archbishops; his work is funded by the Church Commissioners, and his task is to assist clergy to find new appointments, and to advise those making appointments of men and women available for new work.
He has particular responsibility:
(a) for those returning to England after service overseas;
(b) clergy returning to the parochial ministry from specialist posts and from secular employment, and
(c) clergy recommended by their bishops, where the bishop is unable to offer a suitable appointment within his diocese, or where a man or woman wishes or is willing to consider work outside their present diocese.
In addition to assisting those seeking incumbencies and posts of incumbent status, the Adviser is also available to advise those seeking unbeneficed posts in the parochial and specialist ministries.
