Jeremy Dunk

Jeremy Dunk spent 17 years working in a factory, making rubber products for cars and aircraft, before taking up his present work with the elderly and disabled. He started going to St Michael’s Church at Retford when he was 17.

“I started and just carried on, I felt at home. But until my career change, I think I was just doing Christianity by numbers. It was when I got really depressed with the factory, that I turned to prayer. I was comfortable and knew the service off by heart, but I wasn’t extending my faith. Then, when things got bad, I began to pray on my way to the factory every day, for about six months. I felt like I was talking to a friend - I used to pour out whatever was in my mind.”

One day during his walk to work prayer session, Jeremy felt overwhelmed by God and had a sense that someone was there caring about him and that he was being listened to.

He explained: “Everything came along at once, it was as though a switch was flicked and I started looking for a job on a website my sister had suggested and there was a job advertised, which I applied for and got.”

Jeremy is now a community care officer for social services. Working as part of the occupational therapy team, he assesses the practical equipment needs for the elderly and disabled. “It was a big step, leaving my permanent job in the factory for a temporary new one and at the same time we discovered my wife, Carol was pregnant. We took a step of faith and within 12 months I applied and got a permanent job which I really enjoy.”
