Births, Marriages and Deaths, from 1837 and Wills from 1858 Onwards

Central registration of all births, marriages and deaths began in 1837 and records from this point onwards can be accessed through the Family Records Centre, whose website contains full details of the records they hold, how to search for them and how to order copies. Location details and opening hours are also detailed on the site.

The General Register Office provides ordering facilities for certificates and advice on research. There are also a number of commercial sites, many of whom advertise in magazines such as Practical Family History or Your Family Tree which are also themselves useful for family historians.

From 1858 wills were also held centrally, with the establishment of the Court of Divorce, Probate & Admiralty. Indexes to wills can be accessed via the Family Records Centre.
