If your ancestor was an Anglican clergyman the source guide on the Lambeth Palace Library site gives an excellent and detailed introduction to sources for tracing clergy in the Church of England.

Many Church organisations have rich and varied archives which may also contain useful biographical information. Whilst not all of these are fully catalogued and as easy to access as we would like, improvements are being made all the time. The various source guides on the Lambeth Palace Library site provide some detail of these.
