Anglican Sources for Tracing your Family History

These pages provide information about, and links to, sources for tracing your family history. Much of what is covered will be held in archives and repositories across the country but these pages aim to give a guide to where to find information, and in particular which Anglican sources are likely to be of use and how to find them. These pages are not intended to be a comprehensive guide and do not aim to cover all aspects of family history, about which there are very many websites, guides and reference books.

For the beginner taking their first steps in family history or genealogy the GENUKI website, the BBC Guide to family history, The National Archives, or the Society of Genealogists websites are all good starting points.

There are also a great many books on the topic, such as "Smart Family History" by G Swinefield (The National Archives, 2005) or "Trace your Family Tree: Advice and information for taking your first steps in genealogy" (Society of Genealogists, 2004).

Another source of information, often overlooked, are memorials in churches and churchyards.

Information on these pages is split into three main areas:

Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials pre-1837 and Wills pre-1858

Births, Marriages, and Deaths from 1837 and Wills from 1858 onwards
